Victor Erice / 2023 / Spain, Argentina / 169 min / Spanish, Catalan, English, French, Chinese with French subtitles

Set in contemporary Madrid, an aging filmmaker named Miguel Garay is called upon to recount his memories of working on his final and still unfinished film, "The Farewell Gaze." During its production, the lead actor and Miguel's close friend, Julio Arenas, disappeared without a trace, leaving in his wake a mystery that would haunt the lives of everyone associated with the film. Miguel never directed another project, instead living a quiet life as a writer by the coast. He remained reluctant to unravel the mystery surrounding Julio until approached by an investigative television program reviving the case decades later. With careful reflection, he reconnects with the film's crew, former lovers, and Julio's daughter, seeking closure for the disappearance and what it meant for all of their lives.

Over three decades after the release of his previous film, revered Spanish auteur Víctor Erice (The Spirit of the Beehive, El Sur, and Dream of Light) returns with a "poignant cinematic swan song" (The Hollywood Reporter). A reflective culmination of Erice's career in film, Close Your Eyes is a haunting meditation on memory, absence, and the enduring resonance of the moving image.

For kids
Paul King / 2017 / United Kingdom, France, United States / 103 min / French / Ages 6 and up

Certified super-duper "fresh" by Rotten Tomatoes (it's the best-reviewed film in the site's history), Paddington 2 was exactly the balm everyone needed in a decade marked by perplexing acts of unkindness and intolerance. This jubilant, Wes Anderson-esque sequel to the 2014 hit (also directed by Paul King) finds adorably pea-coated Paddington Bear working odd jobs in London to afford a birthday present for his far-away aunt, turning 100. His heart is set on an antique pop-up book, but when it goes missing, our marmalade-loving furball is framed for theft and thrown in the slammer. Hugh Grant has a ball playing a villainous washed-up actor; Sally Hawkins, Brendan Gleeson, and Jim Broadbent round out the human players. Delightfully droll and genuinely affecting, Paddington 2 is "a disarming, refreshing wallow in kindness" (Bilge Ebiri, Village Voice). (The Cinematheque)

Me and My Victim

Casa d'Italia 2024

Cinema • Documentary
Maurane, Billy Pedlow / 2024 / Québec (Canada), United States / English

Me and My Victim screenings will be preceded by the short film Les corps aqueux, winner of Best Art Film at the 5th edition of Montreal's Festival Emergence.

ME AND MY VICTIM recounts the "kind of fucked up" meeting between Maurane and Billy Pedlow. She lives in Montreal, he lives in New York. She's a multimedia artist specializing in video art and he's a poet. Not quite friends and not quite lovers, their meeting feels palpably contemporary in its defiance of labels and firm boundaries. Structured around an off-the-cuff audio recording and built as a kind of Tumblr-esque collage, the film explores, with brutal and paradoxical honesty, the complexity of sex and desire.

Germán Gutiérrez, Carmen Garcia | 2010 | Québec (Canada) | 86 min | French

Voluble. Passionate. Brilliant. In his uncompromising quest for liberty, Pierre Falardeau was a voice heard above most others. An open mind, brimming with ideas. A man who stood for a cause greater than any other: the independence of his homeland. But also a man often blindsided by his own rage, capable of causing harm. With obvious admiration, Germán Gutierrez and Carmen Garcia offer this tribute to a formidable man and moviemaker, who died at age 62 on September 25, 2009. Looking back on his career with the help of those who knew him best, most notably his wife, Pierre Falardeau is packed with archival footage and film excerpts. The film offers a portrait of a uniquely complex individual, equally at ease with political scandal as a song by Jacques Brel.

Pea Soup, by Pierre Falardeau and Julien Poulin, is an ethnographic video on the Québécois tribe. The film is a collage, a puzzle, even, where interlocking images and sounds draw the portrait of a nation. Photographic images, text, and scenes shot in various locations such as factories, create a fragmented and virulent critique of Québec's social and cultural differences.

Saturday night at the old penitentiary, it's party time. A few hours to forget hell. Three hundred lovesick men fill the gymnasium. They drink beer. They smoke joints. The master of ceremonies tells dirty stories. An inmate spits his hatred into the microphone. Then it's time for Ginette, a transvestite, to perform. When the strippers Alexandra and Lili from Paris perform, the gymnasium shakes. The accumulated frustrations of the inmates are forcefully expressed. Backstage, Ginette distributes her caresses without restraint. Love is born between Alexandra and Julien, a member of the prisoners' committee. In a corner, Pierrot is putting on make-up: he's going to try to escape, disguised as a woman. Then Sylvie, the western singer, sings about love and freedom, and the inmates listen religiously, their throats tightening and tears welling up in their eyes. They applaud wildly. They are a hundred miles from prison. A vibrant critique of the prison system here.
