When Garibaldi lands in Sicily, Fabrizio, Prince of Salina, settles with his family in their country house. With them are Father Pirrone and the nephew Tancredi, who passes the time by courting his cousin. But Tancredi soon falls for Angelica, daughter of the mayor Calogero Sedara - one of those bourgeois said to be wealthier than the Prince himself. Prince Salina will consent to the marriage as a sign of "the changing times."
