Meredith Monk – composer, performer, and interdisciplinary artist – is one of the great artistic pioneers of our time, yet her profound cultural influence is largely unrecognized. With Monk's music at its center, and featuring interviews with Björk and David Byrne, Monk in Pieces is a mosaic that mirrors the structure of Monk's own work, and illuminates her wildly original vocabulary of sound and imagery.

Jen Muranetz | 2024 | Canada | 78 min | English with French subtitles

The Fairy Creek (Ada'itsx) valley sprawls across Pacheedaht First Nation territory on southwestern Vancouver Island and its old growth forest ecosystem thrives with lush foliage, ancient tree trunks, and a variety of wildlife. However, the decimating chainsaws and tractor machinery of the Teal Jones lumber corporation disrupt this equilibrium as they demolish an environmental haven for their road-building project. Amidst the tumult, Jen Muranetz's FAIRY CREEK captures the vast collective protests against this destructive logging operation: a movement which has spawned both the largest demonstration of civil disobedience in Canadian history and the mass arrests of 1200 people.

Flore Laurentienne, The End and the Beginning reveals the musical project of Mathieu David Gagnon through a hypnotic concert filmed in the church of Saint-Pacôme, in Kamouraska. Neither fully documentary nor pure performance, the film unveils a discreet artist and a fragile music carried by a dozen classical musicians. Blending live sequences and quiet moments, the river becomes a mirror and the landscapes, visual echoes of a music deeply rooted in place. A sober immersion into a work that slows down time.

Cinema • Drama
Uli Edel | 1981 | Germany | 130 min | German with English subtitles

Adapted from actress and musician Cristiane Felscherinow's harrowing account of her teenage years, CHRISTIANE F. depicts the impact of West Berlin's mid-to-late-70s heroin epidemic on one of its youngest and luckiest survivors. On the cusp of fourteen, David Bowie-worshipping Cristiane (Natja Brunckhorst) begins slipping out from under the watch of her divorced mother (Christiane Lechle) and spending time at hip discotheque Sound. There she falls in love with Detlev (Thomas Haustein), whose recent experiments with heroin soon have her hooked. Working with first-time actors and shooting on location with real-life regulars of Zoo Station's notorious drug cruising scene, director Uli Edel unflinchingly captures the degradation of each phase of junkie life, from underage prostitution to brutal withdrawals to the seemingly endless vows to "go straight." Bowie himself appears in a concert performance of "Station to Station"; the film's soundtrack is a virtual compendium of the epochal musician's celebrated "Berlin period" and a perfect sonic evocation of nightclubbing's dark side.

Hong Kong, 1962: Chow Mo-wan (Tony Leung Chiu-wai) and Su Li-zhen (Maggie Cheung Man-yuk) move into neighboring apartments on the same day. Their encounters are formal and polite-until a discovery about their spouses creates an intimate bond between them. At once delicately mannered and visually extravagant, Wong Kar Wai's In the Mood for Love is a masterful evocation of romantic longing and fleeting moments. With its aching musical soundtrack and exquisitely abstract cinematography by Christopher Doyle and Mark Lee Ping-bin, this film has been a major stylistic influence on the past 25 years of cinema.

The most playful and also the grittiest of Kieślowski's Three Colors films follows the adventures of Karol Karol (Zbigniew Zamachowski), a Polish immigrant living in France. The hapless hairdresser opts to leave Paris for his native Warsaw when his wife (Julie Delpy) sues him for divorce (her reason: their marriage was never consummated) and then frames him for arson after setting her own salon ablaze. White, which goes on to chronicle Karol Karol's elaborate revenge plot, manages to be both a ticklish dark comedy about the economic inequalities of Eastern and Western Europe and a sublime reverie about twisted love.

John is 70 years old and lives in solitary luxury in a grand hotel on the Côte d'Azur. He becomes intrigued by the woman in the room next door who reminds him of his wild years on the Riviera in the 1960s, back when he was a debonair international spy in a world brimming with peril and promise. But when the woman mysteriously disappears, John is beset by flashbacks – or perhaps fantasies – of his glamorous and grotesque past, and the alluring women and dastardly villains who lived and died there. With imagery that pays affectionate homage to the 1960s Eurospy genre and is tinged with playful gore, John's reality becomes fragmented as he seeks to unravel the puzzle of his past. Memory, madness and moviemaking become increasingly difficult to separate. Are his old enemies back to wreak havoc on his idyllic life? Are there yet more conspiracies and treacheries waiting to be unmasked? Or has he simply been bewitched by the beautiful and dangerous lure of escapist cinema itself? (Berlinale)
